Kingston Lacy

Three remarkable members of the Bankes family created Kingtson Lacy. Sir John bought the estate in 1632-6. Sir Ralph built the house in the 1660 and William John transformed it in the 1830's.

Sir John was King Charle's Chief Justice a brilliant lawyer and moderate man. His Wife defended the family seat at Corfe castle during the civil war through two sieges, for which she became known as "Brave Dame Mary". Corfe castle was finaly taken in 1646 when it was partially demolished as a result of treachery.

Having been deprived of his home Sir Ralph Banks decided to build a new one on the estate at Kingtson Lacey.
